| Alverstone | what's in your /etc/runit/1? cuz i have whatever Lorenzo put in there plus my adhd with redirecting it the hell away from tty1 | 00:00 |
|---|---|---|
| Alverstone | or it was in 2? | 00:00 |
| Alverstone | don't remember | 00:00 |
| Alverstone | i probably have 1 intact | 00:00 |
| freem | 1: https://p.mort.coffee/TvR | 00:01 |
| freem | 2: https://p.mort.coffee/IbX | 00:01 |
| freem | I think I modified debian's runit files a bit, but not much | 00:02 |
| freem | for network init, mostly | 00:02 |
| Alverstone | 1 uses /etc/rcS.d, basically sysvinit scripts | 00:02 |
| freem | yeah, well, I started migrating to runit long ago, the idea is to get rid of rc.d and friends when I can, because those are a huge mess | 00:03 |
| freem | my runit files... well, let me show you | 00:03 |
| freem | https://p.mort.coffee/eui | 00:03 |
| freem | https://p.mort.coffee/BgL | 00:04 |
| freem | 1st is a file named /etc/runit/common, 2nd is /etc/runit/log.run | 00:04 |
| freem | the most complex service: /etc% upl sv/udev/run | 00:05 |
| freem | https://p.mort.coffee/JAA | 00:05 |
| freem | etc% wc -l sv/*/run | upl | 00:05 |
| freem | https://p.mort.coffee/oOL | 00:05 |
| freem | they look usually like that: /etc% upl sv/wpa/run | 00:06 |
| freem | https://p.mort.coffee/MEO | 00:06 |
| freem | why the /etc/runit/log.run file? Because I just symlink it in the sv/$foobar/log/run | 00:06 |
| freem | ah, they left | 00:16 |
| Guest15 | hey guys about to install 5.01, but my dealbreaker is I require an onboard virtual keyboard to work. what would be the best init option, my preference is for plasma DE ? does anyone have any experience with a working virtual keyboard on a 2 in 1 laptop, for a nonsystemD distro. my hardware is a dell 5310 i5-10th gen. thanks. | 04:04 |
| gnarface | Guest never sticks around long enough for those type of questions... | 04:38 |
| onefang | Ah I was out shopping and missed that convo. I'll remind people that "shell scripts" that sysv init and other things that run "shell scripts" can be written in any language. I proved that with my PolygLua thing, which I did use for an init script, written in Lua, and the test script has half a dozen different langauges in it, including C. | 04:39 |
| onefang | I've written init "scripts" in pure compiled C in the past as well. Fully LSB compliant and everything. | 04:42 |
| onefang | That question from Guest15 conflated a bunch of things, not sure what they actually needed anyway. | 04:44 |
| gnarface | do any of the installers have a built-in virtual keyboard? it isn't something i recall being supported ever... | 04:45 |
