darwintoday's update said: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.1.0-25-amd64. /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub: /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 43: /etc/default/grub: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution09:22
darwinonly seems present in default/preset line: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`09:23
darwinso now it can't update kernel09:23
darwinfixed it09:28
darwinhow do I prevent /etc/resolv.conf from being overwritten?  I'm not used to foolish 'services' overwriting this in a non-UNIX-like way09:53
rrqthe dns setting is typically part of the dhcp protocol and in default setup the dhcp client will be the one writing /etc/resolv.conf09:56
rrqsome dhcp clients can be configured to ignore the dns settings offered y the dhcp server09:57
onefangOr you can tackle it from the other end if it's DHCP doing that.  My DHCP is run by my router, which I configured to hand out the correct DNS settings.  That wont work if it's your ISP giving you your DHCP stuff.10:07
darwini just need instructions for default10:16
onefangSounds like what rrq was talking about, but he might be having dinner right now.  I should to.10:26
rrqwhich dhcp client do you use? does it have a man page?10:45
djph'dinner' at 10:30?10:47
rrq+100010:48
onefang18:48 here.10:48
djphoh, right, you're across the pond the other way ...10:49
onefang"We come from the land down under."  B-)10:49
djph:) well, enjoy then ... oh, this isn't -offtopic, oops :(10:52
darwinthe default11:00
rrqsometimes one can do "dpkg -l | grep dhcp" to get a clue11:01
rrqmany dhcp clients come in packages whose name includes "dhcp"11:02
rrqI'm not sure anyone can guess about your system11:03
darwinit just came with Devuan 5 installer11:03
darwini didn't do anything different/special11:03
djphshould(tm) just be isc-dhcp then11:04
rrqyou need to know which one you have so that you can edit your configuration files. I don't think any of them come with a tickbox gui11:04
darwinyeah11:04
rrqi don't use isc-dhcp anymore but I seem to remember it well documented but with some quirk regarding dns updates; I may be wrong. In any case, open your mind and revel in acquiring some new knowledge from its man pages...11:13
darwinthere seems to be no manpage11:16
darwini found it11:17
rrqthe package isc-dhcp-client seeems to have 4 man pages (you can check with "dpkg -L | grep man/man")11:19
rrqwell: dpkg -L isc-dhcp-client | grep man/man11:23
onefangdarwin left.11:23
onefangMight be rebooting to test the fix they found.11:24
rrqreboot? .. reconnect, surely11:24
rrqis there a quirk if the net is brought up bre-pivot? I would guess then any config change needs to be written into the initrd (as well)?11:28
rrq.. pre-pivot ... i.e. with allow-hotplug11:28
onefangSometimes there's a timing quirk between services if the network isn't up yet, even if the dependencies should work around that.11:28
darwini want to download a specific old package (ytalk) source code tabrall but can't find it11:48
rrqytalk was in beowulf latest11:50
darwini see11:51
rrqyou can add "deb-src http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf/main amd64" to your sources list and the I think apt-get source ytalk would give you the debian source11:51
darwinthanks11:51
rrqpossibly not its upstream tarball though11:52
darwini have that anyway11:52
darwinbut the Debian/Devuan version seems some versions behind.  I have 3.1.111:54
darwinwith that one, on one Debian PC some compiler flags were '-lSM -lICE  -lX11'.  On the other one, ld couldn't find the first two11:58
darwini found them12:00
rrqbeowulf version is 3.3.0-9+b312:01
darwinokay, but can it be run as an X window instead of terminal?  It might be a different fork12:02
rrqyes ytalk seems to be an ncurses program, so runs in a terminal12:05
darwinit might be both if I can find the original source code12:07
rrqseems 3.1.1 ies earlier.. get tgz with: wget ftp://ftp.ourproject.org/pub/ytalk/ytalk-3.1.1.tar.gz12:11
rrqthat version seems to have had X11 interface12:11
rrqI'm reading https://ytalk.ourproject.org/YTalk-espel.html12:12
rrqfwd pointer to https://ytalk.ourproject.org/YTalk-metawire.html which offers an 3.1.2 tgz12:14
darwinif I can't run a daemon/inetd/server such as the old ktalkd (KDE talk) that will let someone BSD talk me on my PC and it pops up in X, I'm not sure I'm going to use it anymore.  They discontinued that in KDE3... we used it for some years after (before forced to use KDE4) if someone else in the house had to message me on my PC to ask me to do something.  Nothing is simpler nor faster without a lot of other complications12:15
fonkyhi all12:17
darwinthe only other thing I guess I could do is keep my X ytalk open and make them an icon to launch it12:17
fonkyone question if fdisk -l does not give output about a usb flash what else can i use?12:18
fonkylsblk also does not show it12:18
darwinlsscsi12:18
darwinit shouldn't be too many pages of output like those may have (if you have a fair bit of RAM) then you can see if it's still working12:19
rrqfonky: does something get listed in /var/log/syslog when you unplug/plug it in?12:19
darwinalso dmesg after you connect it12:19
fonkyrrq yes it does12:20
fonkywhen plugging in the info about the drive when unplugging it usb door #12:20
fonkyit shows it as disk drive12:20

fonkynope12:21
fonkythis is the whole output12:22

fonkyrunning live dvd iso12:22
rrqright /dev/sr012:22
fonkyyeah thats the cd/dvd12:23
rrqyou can mount that ... typically on /media/cdrom12:23
fonkyand fdisk -l just does not show usb drives12:23
rrqit shos all disk drives12:24
fonkytypically, yes12:24
rrqdoesn't show cd drives12:24
rrqhmm that kingston should show up12:27
fonkyalso udiskie and gparted fail at starting up12:27
rrqdoes the machine have a USB3.0 port?12:28
fonkyyes12:28
fonkyit does not show up if connected at usb 2.x or usb 3.x port12:29
rrqand xhci_* modules get loaded?12:29
fonkynot sure about the last, its a live 5.012:32
rrqlsmod | grep xhci12:33
fonkyyes they do12:33
fonkyshow up12:33
fonkyusbcore and usbcommon12:33
rrqcan you use a usb hub in between?12:33
fonkyusbcore               348160  8 xhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,ehci_pci,usbhid,usb_storage,ehci_hcd,xhci_pci,ohci_pci12:34
fonkyusb_common             16384  4 xhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,usbcore,ehci_hcd12:34
fonkyxhci-pci. xhci_hcd and what i have pasted12:35
rrqyes.. looks fine as such12:36
fonkyoh and gnome disk utility does start up but not showing usb flash12:36
fonkyand usb ports do work fine, else i would not be typing and moving the cursor :)12:37
rrqone test is to use a usb hub if you have one12:39
fonkynopes12:40
fonkybrb going to try something12:40
joergtail -f /var/log/... &; #plug-the-USB-storage-device; #report-here13:01
joergooops, nebermind >> <rrq> fonky: does something get listed in /var/log/syslog...<< missed that13:03
