taylanIs the netinstall ISO supposed to work by dd'ing onto a flash drive? I wanted to try out Excalibur but on boot the installer says "LABEL=DEVUAN60: Can't look up blockdev" and a bunch of similar errors then drops me into BusyBox. This is on an ancient laptop (T61).14:07
djphtaylan: yes, that's usually how the netinst iso's work.14:10
djphwell, I mean the "dd to usb stick, boot" approach14:10
taylanguess I'll try stable14:14
rrqtaylan: try this: reboot again and add EMERG at the end of the boot line (i press TAB and add EMERGE then push enter)...14:14
rrqEMERG    without last e14:14
rrqit will start an early emergency shell, where you do: modprobe sd_mod14:15
rrqthen do: exit14:15
rrqthere is a possibility that that will work; i.e. still complain a bit but start the installer14:16
taylanrrq: what happened when I did that: Shows the error messages first, then starts the emergency shell where I enter the modprobe command, then when I exit that one it immediately drops me into the top-level emergency shell again. (And exiting that one is a panic, presumably because it's PID 1.)14:51
rrqnot good :( you have UEFI boot? and is it a usb stick or disk? USB2 or 3?14:52
rrqyou did use EMERG and not emerg ?14:53
taylanoh, I used smallcaps emerg...14:53
taylanT61 probably has no UEFI, and only USB 214:53
taylantrying allcaps14:53
rrqok could you try with EMERG as well ?14:54
rrq(snap:)14:54
taylanoh yes, that worked!14:54
rrqthanks! tempforever is chasing the issue and this is good info14:55
taylanHmm now after partitioning I got the error message: "Unmerged /usr is not compatible with excalibur."15:25
taylanI used guided partitioning using the full disk.15:26
taylanso just / and swap15:26
tempforeveron that iso you must use expert install, it will ask whether to merge usr and you must select yes15:28
tempforeverthat problem has been fixed but a new iso hasn't been published yet15:28
tempforever(the normal install does not ask, and defaults to no, so it fails)15:29
rrqI suppose it's ok to drop down to expert mode, then perhaps go back to partitioning to let it ask the merged-usr question after it15:30
rrqselect "Change debconf priority" on the installer menu and make it "low", then continue... hmm at "Install the base system" should be possible, or maybe "partition disks" to make sure the disks are cleared15:33
rrqthe "merged-usr" option is at the beginning of "install the base system"15:34
taylanexpert mode doesn't seem to offer ext4, only ext2...15:44
rrqyou skipped "load cpmponents"15:44
taylanoh15:44
rrqit's badly named so one thinks its optional15:45
taylanexactly, especially since it's netinstall :)15:45
rrqthat step must run even without selecting any extra components.. to get the non-extra components15:46
rrq(such as the full collection of possible file formats)15:47
rrqfilesystem formats15:48
* rrq bedtime15:50
taylansleep well, and thanks for the help!15:51
taylanhaving sysvinit and xfce on a t61 makes me feel like it's 2010 again :D it even has a spinning disk in it. this is gonna be an offsite backup slave; I wonder how much longer the hardware will survive.17:13
yetiin t60/61 the cpu fans were one of the weak spots.17:16
taylanyup, it was saying "Fan error" the first few times I booted it, but thankfully you can just hit ESC and it continues. Then it stopped complaining, maybe because it started moving after all and loosened up some gunk, lol.17:18
taylanbut even if it doesn't spin, I think the CPU is modern enough to not overheat itself to death17:18
taylanI had actually replaced the fan unit of this thing *twice* back when I was daily driving it in the early 10s17:19
al1r4di wish they make a laptop like x60 until x230 design18:06
