djphheh12:29
brocashelm'sup DeVuan12:35
gnarfaceif that guy comes back and isn't a troll, someone just tell him to try out the stable live iso16:00
gnarfaceand tell him that yes, it has a fucking "software center"16:00
gnarface(strongly suspect that was a troll but it's hard to tell sometimes)16:00
al1r4ddevuan = dev 1 = dev one16:21
golinuxToo bad there wasn't anyone to provide good info16:56
watoHello20:25
gnarfacewato: hello, don't ask permission to ask permission, just ask20:25
watoAnyone here uses Devuan both for gaming and web development?20:26
gnarfaceprobably everyonehere20:26
gnarfacethat's still not your real question though20:26
gnarfaceskip to the actual question20:27
watoSorry, first time participating in a chat like this. I come from Linux mint (xfce) with i3. I had a lot of problems with packages, so i decided to install debian, a friend of mine recommended me Devuan, so here i am. I'm still a noob in this, just looking for some general warnings about Devuan. In my linux mint installation i had problems with Audio stability and Cpu governor settings, should this be more stable?20:28
gnarfacemint isn't known for being super high quality, so yes20:29
gnarfacehowever, audio is something poorly implemented and poorly understood in Linux, so you may have issues in EVERY distro. if you're more specific about which issues, i can often, but not always help (about 30% of the time it's manufacturer instigated driver issues that will never be fixed but the other 70% of the time it's user error because alsa configs are obtuse and pulseaudio is a hostile player)20:30
gnarfacethe cpu frequency governor settings are rock solid though and if you just need help understanding them i can help you with that easily20:30
watoNice to know that Mint is not that high quality, i was using it at the office, but always felt a little bit rough.20:31
gnarfacemaybe your best choice would be to start with a live iso to test driver compatibility with your rig without having to commit to an install: https://files.devuan.org/devuan_daedalus/desktop-live/20:31
watoThat seems very reasonable, thank you for that20:31
gnarfacewell, there are economics involved. Mint wants everything to work out of the box and be easy for users, but chasing that goal they often, like Ubuntu, accidentally sacrifice stability by embracing "bleeding-edge" versions of stuff20:32
watoIs the 5.15 kernel version something to do with it?20:33
gnarfaceDevuan stable however, like Debian stable, commits to frozen major versions of stuff, which eliminates a lot of the risk of always chasing updates20:33
gnarface"Is the 5.15 kernel version something to do with it?" < no way to tell about this without isolating specific driver bugs related to your actual hardware. current Devuan and Debian stable however are using a highly patched-up 6.1 for whatever that's worth20:34
gnarfacei have older kernels here running rock solid stable on older hardware too though20:35
gnarfaceit's all about which drivers you need and how well they support your particular devices20:35
gnarfaceusually cpu frequency governor drivers aren't a problem. audio often is, but also most the time the audio glitches can be easily fixed by some minor configs that there's only probably at most 1000 people on the planet who know how to do them20:36
watoThat's so funny, because i feel i went on an adventure in the internet to find a few alternative configs20:37
watoNone of them works20:37
gnarfacewell, start with that live iso and see if it's working. if not, i can help.20:37
gnarface(probably)20:37
watoThank you very much, i will take care of your good disposition20:38
gnarfaceif i'm not around for alsa issue, there's always the #alsa channel on this irc network, the alsa-devel mailing list, or... wherever pulseaudio's support is20:38
watoNice!20:38
gnarfacethe problem i'm seeing a lot lately is just that alsa is picking people's HDMI outputs as the default device, so it looks like it's working but they hear no sound because they're not using HDMI20:39
watoThat the thing i was just going to describe20:39
gnarfacevery simple to fix20:39
wato:O!20:39
gnarfacebut i'm gonna need to see the output of "aplay -L" on your system (put it at paste.debian.net and give me the link; don't paste it in here)20:40
watoOk!20:40
watoLet me go through the installation of Devuan, I dont want to touch this distro anymore20:40
watoI will be back20:40
gnarfaceok, good luck20:40
watoThank you very much!20:40
