onefangThis is very annoying.  Just to relax this weekend I've been trying out a bunch of games from the Devuan repo.  Lots of them want to grab all my monitors, switch them to some lower resolution, and spread it's window across all of them.01:06
onefangThen I have to put my monitors back the way they where.  This screws up my tmux panes, coz they all shrink.  I have lots of tmux panes.01:07
gnarfaceonefang: so, what's happening is the games are set in "fullscreen" mode and your window manager is reacting to that. there's a way to stop it from doing that.01:07
onefangDon't suppose there's some way of locking my monitor settings?01:07
gnarfaceonly if the window manager supports it01:08
gnarfacein enlightenment what i do is just force them to "windowed" mode and set the game resolution to match the display resolution manually01:08
onefangAwesome is what I use.01:08
gnarfacei haven't really used that one since the 90's01:09
gnarfaceno idea if it can do that01:09
onefangYes, once into the game I can sometimes set their resolution and turn off fullscreen mode, but it does this at first startup, BEFORE I can fix it.01:09
gnarfaceyea, that's annoying, i hate that01:09
gnarfacesometimes the games themselves will have a command-line option to prevent it though, worth looking into01:10
onefangNo way to tell X "Hey, THIS is the graphics mode I want, don't let random software change that?01:10
onefangI'm doing this for fun, reading manuals isn't part of the fun.  lol01:11
gnarfaceuh, if you set xorg to manually only include the one valid resolution you want that matches your monitor settings instead of leaving the xorg.conf out so it auto-detects, that might work01:11
gnarfaceworth a try anyway01:11
onefangI'll look into that.01:12
onefangMostly looking for a space shoot'm'up where I can use my mouse.  Keyboard for that is hard on my old fingers.  Or today I can find out which box my joystick is in after the most recent house move.01:14
onefangHard house move, lots of frustrations, I need to shoot the shit out of things now.  Pretend they are real estate agents, unless that's an existing game.01:15
fsmithredwant a copy of netwars.exe from novell dos?01:15
gnarfaceat some point, games stopped doing this to me and enlightenment just started scaling fullscreen windows with hardware features of my video card, but i can't remember if that was a change to the enlightenment core default behaviors or if it's a change i made in the control panel myself01:16
fsmithredI think it's mouse and arrow keys01:16
onefangSo the end goal is mindless virtual violence I don't have to think about.01:18
onefangNah fsmithred there's plenty to choose from in the Devuan repos.  I just gotta find some I like.01:19
onefangSome of the ones I tried last night use joystick, so I'll go looking for it now.01:22
gnarfaceonefang: one other idea if you're desperate and aren't strapped for computing resources is you could try xnest01:23
gnarfacei've never tried it myself, but it runs a whole separate xserver in a window and once was recommended for debugging driver issues01:24
gnarfacebut it could just as easily be used like the wine "virtual desktop" feature to contain misbehaved "fullscreen" windows01:25
gnarfacei'd try nailing down the xorg.conf first though01:25
onefangI have 64 cores and 256 GB of RAM, don't think I'm strapped for resources.  B-)01:35
onefangThough I have been testing out my next upgrade in a VM.  Now you have givin me the idea of just using that for the games this weekend.01:36
onefangFound both my joysticks, forgot I had the second one.  Didn't find my 3D spacemouse though, but not likely any game would support it.01:36
onefangRight now I have joysticks, so I'll have some fun with those games that I installed last night that support joysticks.  I'll poke at xorg.conf later, there's ornery aliens or what ever to kill now!01:39
onefangThanks gnarface.01:39
gnarfacenp01:39
onefangFound enough games, no need to screw with xorg.conf.03:30
brocashelmthat's kind of why i always game on a single monitor03:49
brocashelmmost older games don't handle the resolutions very well when in fullscreen03:49
onefangI really hate "fulllscreen" coz it grabs your keys and mouse.  Just gimme a maximized borderless window, then I can still use my WMs keys to switch windows and virtual desktops.03:55
* onefang adds "hack Awesome to convert every request for fullscreen to just be maximized borderless" to my TODO.03:55
rwpI keep a dedicated system to game upon with one display.04:12
rwpI used awesome for too long before I gave up trying to make it better and switched to i3.04:13
onefangI like that Awesome is configured with Lua, one of my fave languages.  I've already made it better for me, and I was planning on working on it more anyway.04:19
helios21onefang: Hi! What games did you find? It is quite a bit of work to find which games play nice enough with the system. They use all kinds of different ways to setup screens. Many more modern games are configurable enough, but others aren't. And either screw the resolution or appear on the wrong screen in full screen mode and so on. I use Plasma and KDE window manager (kwin) window fules for some of those.10:22
helios21onefang: I also use Flatpak on my Devuan Ceres to install some games as Flatpaks. There are some that just are currently not packaged for Debian/Devuan.10:22
helios21onefang: And I also do have some proprietary games from gog.com, like Stardew Valley. I'd love a beautiful free software alternative to that one. I use Heroic Games Launcher for that. There is a Debian package to download. Unfortunately it is not packages officially in Debian yet.10:24
helios21onefang: I have installed some shoot them up space stuff. I can try to find out a list. But I will have to scan the app menu, cause I do not remember all the package names. Or remember or look up how to list packages by tags.10:25
helios21Now continuing on my extra cool Devuan Excalibur based Incus Linux container setup. Most containers are Alpine Linux, really impressed by that. But now I am doing a Devuan container for Wordpress as I use Debian package for Wordpress to avoid updating too often. I believe the maintainer does a good job on backporting security fixes.10:28
helios21It is amazing how much faster Quassel IRC core is on the new server. NVME SSD storage really plays out.10:29
helios21I stop spamming the channel now :)10:29
onefanghelios21: Using synaptic, I select the "Games and Amusements" section, lots of games there.10:55
onefangI've gone through all the ones that look like they might be fun for me, tested them, and removed any that where too buggy / wouldn't lret me switch them to a single window.11:04
onefangEnded up with over 60, so I'm not gonna list them.  Now to start actually playing them.  B-)11:05
gordonDrogonyou only need 1: adventure13:14
helios21onefang: Over 60? Well have fun!16:14
helios21haha after https://bugs.debian.org/1068922 I also feel like playing a silly shoot them up game.16:15
