gnarfacenot super important, but a user here just had a weird failure to print a pdf from chromium on daedalus, anyone seen such an issue? all that got printed was a couple lines of error messsage. something that apparently came installed with KDE called "Okular" printed it fine though, so i don't think it's an actual problem with the pdf or the print server.00:49
gnarfacecan't really copy and paste the error, but i'll type it into paste.debian.net as best i can00:49
gnarfacehere, this is more or less exactly what chromium printed, just this text, i even tried to replicate the whitespace: https://paste.debian.net/1362754/00:51
gnarfacei've seen stuff that vaguely looks like this in the past, usually when trying to print a postscript file using the wrong driver, but in such a case i would not expect a different program to print it fine00:53
onefangThere's a security update for chromium that I'm installing now, but it's changelog doesn't mention anything like that.00:56
* onefang is annoyed that I had to install chromium just to see the local city councils flood map, then found out it was useless anyway.00:58
greenjeansThere's a security update for chromium every week, not that i'm complaining mind you, but yeah, every week01:04
Guest87Maybe it would be just better to install void for me lol09:19
Guest87But why is void packagemanager worse ?09:19
Guest87I thought it's made on simplicity09:19
Guest87Or I wait few more days till Excalibur works09:22
Guest87Lol09:22
XenguyLast night I spilled a very small amount of wine on my main laptop, wiped it up thinking nothing of it, and then later on noticed my spacebar wasn't producing the expected output, and the 'n' key didn't work etc.14:25
XenguyI turned it off, placed it upside down (for no particular reason), and left it overnight...14:26
XenguyTried again this morning and those keyboard keys are still out of commission, alas...14:26
XenguyJust wondering if anyone has crossed this bridge before?  If I wait are the keys likely to dry and come back to life?  Do I need to open the laptop up to ventilate it, or should I just bite the bullet and find a laptop repair place to look at it?14:27
HurgotronXenguy: What brand/model of laptop is it?15:00
XenguyHurgotron, This one is a Thinkpad X25015:05
temp_foreveridk that particular model, but laptop keyboards are usually not too difficult to remove.  although I have come across some recent hp models that do things backwards and you have to remove everything to get to the keyboard.15:07
temp_forevermy thinkpad t550 is easy to remove keyboard.  if it's possible, I'd try taking it out and cleaning it.15:08
fsmithredmight be possible to pull a couple keys off and clean it with a q-tip and alcohol15:11
Xenguytemp_forever, Makes sense, I've never tried taking it apart, but if it doesn't come around on it's own, I could see about that15:11
temp_foreverhttps://www.manualslib.com/manual/912131/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X250.html?page=91#manual  unfortunately it's a bit more complicated than the t550 keyboard15:11
Xenguyfsmithred, duly noted, thanks15:12
temp_foreveryeah try a local-area-cleaning first :)15:12
Xenguytemp_forever, Yeah, laptops can be a bit convoluted sometimes15:12
fsmithredand for future reference, if it's still wet, try vacuum cleaner with narrow hose attachment, just don't suck up any of your keys.15:13
XenguyI'm not sure if these chicklet-style keys just pull off or not, but I'll keep that in mind15:13
fsmithredis chicklet the good kind?15:13
Xenguyfsmithred, heh, don't have a vacuum, so no danger of that : -)15:13
fsmithredlol15:13
fsmithredbroom won't work15:14
XenguyNope15:14
XenguyI took it into the kitchen and turned on the overhead fan, so we'll see if that helps at all15:14
fsmithrednope to the keys?15:14
XenguyNope to the broom15:14
HurgotronAnd absolutely switch it off ASAP. I had electrolysis removing some of the traces from the keybaord membrane after a rather small spill. I could have saved it if I didn't just keep using it.15:14
HurgotronThe old Thinkpads (old keyboard style) had drain holes. You could pour buckets of water on them, mo issue15:15
fsmithredwow, what a great design concept15:16
XenguyHurgotron, Yeah, the X220 I'm on right now has that feature15:17
XenguyHurgotron, It's powered down, yes15:17
sosmlgHallo15:25
sosmlg:315:25
Xenguyfsmithred, Well I just got rough with the spacebar and ripped the 'n' key right off...15:30
XenguyI'm not sure I was supposed to do that, but hopefully it won't wreck the think completely...15:30
XenguyThe disadvantage of laptops is this difficulty of maintenance.  I'm actually considering keeping my laptops and then getting a desktop system again, after 10 years15:31
fsmithredum, well at least it has replaceable parts15:31
XenguyI need to find a new computer place at this new location anyway ; -)15:32
n4dirwhat i'd probably do is just use an external keyboard15:33
fsmithredadd an external monitor and you have a desktop computer15:34
Xenguyn4dir, good idea if need be15:36
n4dirXenguy: sure, if there is a way to really solve the problem, that would be better. But if not ... :-)15:36
n4diri sure prefer desktops computers too15:37
Xenguyfsmithred, I suppose so, heh.  Alas this is the laptop that I used to carry around with me, to use public wifi, cos the battery is still quite decent.  I may be to buy yet another laptop to replace it if it doesn't come around.15:37
HurgotronXenguy: New keyboard for the X250 should be affordable. Interestingly, I also find single key repair kits for that model15:43
XenguyHurgotron, Where do you find those, Amazon or ...?15:43
Hurgotronhttps://www.laptopkey-europe.com/key-lenovo-thinkpad-x250-11441.html15:46
Hurgotronsaw also offers for used keyboards. The nice thing about thinkpads is that they are quite common, and so are spare parts15:48
Hurgotronthen again... https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/64dosr/x250_keyboard_replacement_story/15:49
XenguyThanks Hurgotron , will have a read when I have a spare minute here16:02
|cos|For the past one and a half years my Devuan laptop has occasionally hung at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated". A hard power-cycle has always got me past it, but today I'm on my third boot attempt still stuck. Any ideas on what to do?17:06
rwpHmm...  Not sure.  But maybe at the GRUB boot screen edit the kernel options adding "failsafe"?  I am just guessing in the dark.17:17
rwpFound this forum posting: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=318517:21
|cos|rwp: Thanks! I got it booting with "failsafe" added to the command line. Also switched to 6.1.0-28 rather than -31 which I tried the first four times. Will try rebooting again to see if its reproducable with one factor. (Which I guess it wont be)17:26
rwpWhen I searched around I saw that most often this problem seemed to be associated to proprietary graphics drivers.17:29
|cos|It's an old ThinkPad with regular intel drivers.17:29
fsmithred|cos|, do you recall if you installed from live-iso or one of the installer isos?17:37
|cos|My notes are in a mess. I remembered patching udev with debug prints last time this happened, but I can't find no traces of that now. :(17:37
|cos|fsmithred: Using debian-installer, definitely.17:38
|cos|installer build 20230607+deb12udevuan1 specifically, according to /var/log/installer/lsb-release17:40
fsmithredI'm just wondering if creating a few static device nodes would help. The live installer does that, and you could do that manually. rwp got an opinion on this?17:42
|cos|Do we know which nodes it creates? I'm guessing https://salsa.debian.org/live-team/ is where one should start looking? It's a bit of a haystack though.17:47
|cos|Or would those manually created nodes be something devuan specific?17:48
plasma41gnarface: What's the model of printer that you're using?17:55
rwpfsmithred, I don't know what is waiting for what so I don't have an opinion on it.  Other than that it is almost certainly related to the asynchronous operation during boot of the Linux kernel.  Interacting with something else that is waiting for something that is never going to appear.18:05
fsmithred|cos|, I was thinking of something like this that starts at line 1202 - https://git.devuan.org/devuan/refractainstaller-base/src/branch/master/refractainstaller18:59
fsmithredyou'd have to do that when the system is not running, maybe boot live-usb or something. And it's just a wild guess that it would help.19:00
|cos|fsmithred: Understood. Thanks for the suggestion and the reference! I'll give it a go and we'll see if it makes the problem go away.19:14
