devuanconsumer_I have a problem using redshift and xsct I believe because my monitor isn't detected. I have installed firmware-amd-graphics without success. I have a Radeon Pro W6300 graphics card05:01
devuanconsumer_plz help05:01
gnarfacestick around, be patient, someone can probably help05:02
devuanconsumer_lol i always come in with problems05:02
devuanconsumer_lol05:02
gnarfacewhy is it that you think your monitor isn't detected?05:02
gnarfaceusually that wouldn't show any display at all05:02
gnarfaceyou get picture though, right?05:03
devuanconsumer_when i open display it says "unknown display" and the resolution is correct at 2560x1440, refresh rate is 93 hz but i can't click on them: they're greyed out.05:03
devuanconsumer_yeah i do05:03
devuanconsumer_i am using it now lol05:03
gnarfacei've never used redshift before, but i think it might depend on colord, do you have colord installed?05:03
adhocwhich distro version is this ?05:04
gnarfacei'm also pretty sure that last i heard it only works in Xorg, not wayland05:04
adhocwhat is colord ?05:04
devuanconsumer_daedalus05:04
devuanconsumer_i am using cinnamon05:04
devuanconsumer_yes colord is installed05:05
gnarfaceadhoc: it's something from contrib that the nvidia drivers pull in if you don't disable recommends. they nvidia-settings hooks into it for dynamic color correction, which aiui is a superset of redshift functionality05:05
adhocoh ok05:05
adhocam yet to upgrade any machines to daedalus05:06
adhocwell, i did upgrade my play laptop and libraries shat, so i blew it away and installed netbsd 10 to play with05:06
devuanconsumer_well actually i think the reason my monitor is greyed out and redshift / xsct doesn't work is because the drivers are not for my graphics card05:07
gnarfaceyou're not doing anything weird with monitor cable adapters or anything like that, are you? like using analog vga adapter or something like that?05:10
gnarfacei'm not sure where the device support list for that package is...05:11
gnarfaceoh, looks like it's in the long description for the package: https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/package-query.html?c=package&q=firmware-amd-graphics=20230210-505:13
gnarfacethere's a newer one in backports you could try05:13
gnarfacei'm not sure that's your issue yet though05:13
lrufreem: is it possible to build a non-module based kernel and still use initramfs for booting?  my guess is yes, but 100% sure05:17
adhoclru: you could, but it would be quite large05:17
lruthe kernel, or the initramfs?05:18
lruadhoc: I dream of building a kernel for my exact hardware and software needs someday, and nothing else05:18
adhoci was trying to build specific kernels for specific machines, so there was no modules, but USB stuff did not work05:18
adhocyou need dynamic loading of some systems05:19
* lru is sad05:19
adhocit was many megabytes,05:19
adhoci had to rebuild it all quite a few times to get the memory foot print down05:19
adhocas the machine was A) tiny, B) old, C) had 512MB05:19
adhocD) had history with me, wanted it to be useful and reuse it again05:20
lruare you saying that when you unplug a USB device, the module is unloaded from the kernel?05:20
adhoclru: i also wanted to build it out to a pair of floppy disks05:20
lrui.e. they use modules to handle plugging and unplugging?05:20
lrummmmmmmm, floppy disks05:20
lruwould do me no good on a thinkpad05:21
adhoclru: something can be compiled in, some need to be modules05:22
adhocmay take you some experimentation.05:22
adhocfirst step is to remove all the things you do not need.05:22
lruadhoc: thanks.... sounds like initramfs is not the problem then... but other things... and tedium05:22
adhocchop out support for hardware you do not have, etc05:22
lruyeah05:22
adhocyeah, its all tedius05:22
adhocbut the joy of hand crafting the thing you want can be good too ;)05:23
lru:-)05:23
devuanconsumer_i'm not doing anything weird with monitor cables05:31
devuanconsumer_i tried the new amd-graphics driver in backports and it didn't work05:31
devuanconsumer_guess i'm screwed05:31
devuanconsumer_well when i have the right driver on my other computers the redshift works05:31
devuanconsumer_but when i don't have the right graphics driver, it doesn't05:32
gnarfacei would recommend finding out exactly which version you actually need for that video card05:33
gnarfaceit may need accompanying updates to Xorg, Mesa and the kernel, you should be able to find out which upstream versions contain all those fixes, then keep an eye out for them getting added to ceres05:36
gnarface(or just build and install them yourself, though that's much more work)05:36
gnarfacebut like i said, i'm still not sure that's the problem05:42
gnarfacemaybe the Xorg log would shed some light... if it's really not recognizing the display, there might be a workaround involving loading the display firmware directly into Xorg through the config file05:43
gnarfacei had done that once myself before figuring out the actual issue was a syntax error elsewhere in my xorg config05:44
devuanconsumer_how can i check the xorg log05:51
devuanconsumer_i foudn it05:55
devuanconsumer_what paste bin do we use here05:56
devuanconsumer_https://pastebin.com/78sApWxg06:01
devuanconsumer_here is what the log says06:01
gnarfacedevuanconsumer_: paste.debian.net please06:49
gnarfacepastebin has ads06:50
devuanconsumer_http://paste.debian.net/1330458/06:50
gnarfacedevuanconsumer_: uh, yea, looks like your initial diagnosis may be correct. it seems to try the amdgpu driver then fail over to the fbdev driver, which would be exactly what one would expect to happen if the card isn't recognized by the driver because it's too new06:53
rrq... "(EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory"06:53
gnarfaceyea, i think if it was a permissions error because of not being in the video group it might still give that error, so maybe make sure you're in the video group06:54
gnarfacebut it seems entirely likely the card is just too new of a model06:54
devuanconsumer_how can i make sure i am in the video group06:55
gnarfacerun the command "groups" as your user06:55
gnarfaceif you're using a graphical login though it might not matter06:55
gnarfaceas root, check for that file actually existing06:55
gnarfaceif it actually doesn't exist, then it's for sure the driver06:55
devuanconsumer_devuanconsumer cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev users netdev bluetooth lpadmin scanner06:56
devuanconsumer_root@devuanconsumer:/home/devuanconsumer# groups06:56
devuanconsumer_root06:56
devuanconsumer_it looks fine06:56
rrqand what about: ls -l /dev/dri/card007:10
devuanconsumer_ls: cannot access '/dev/dri/card0': No such file or directory07:21
gnarfaceyea, if the kernel driver was working i'm pretty sure it would have created that file07:49
gnarfacehow recently was this hardware released? did you happen to try it in ceres?07:50
gnarfacetypically if it's been out at least 6 months or so they usually at least have something in ceres for it, otherwise your only choice really is to get it from upstream07:51
gnarface(or just wait)07:51
freem<lru> freem: is it possible to build a non-module based kernel and still use initramfs for booting?  my guess is yes, but 100% sure08:47
freemhow would I know?08:47
MarcFPhello10:02
MarcFPi see an issue with my graphic card again ...10:02
MarcFPhttps://dpaste.com/25FWCASY510:03
MarcFPbut i have this vga card : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-S GT1 [UHD Graphics 730] (rev 0c)10:03
MarcFPdoes anyone know how to solve it ? thanks for all and excuse agains my new baby user dummy question10:04
djphshame he left13:33
djphoh, 3 hours ago; oops13:33
fataldid the mirror path in sources.list change recently?15:00
fatalnvm maybe my system clock is off15:03
joerganother "Alder Lake-S" or just same user once again?16:04
joergiirc the latter16:05
joergdifficult to help this guy16:05
dvbsthello16:16
dvbstyou may or may not remember my previous problem, which was that after i migrated from devuan 4 to 5, i couldnt log in because the tty cleared and i couldnt do much16:17
dvbstnow i updated again, and have the same problem, but discovered that it doesnt clear the screen, but just switches to tty7, where the display manager should appear, but it doesnt, because after the update i have no nvidia drivers16:18
dvbsthow do i make it not constantly switch to tty7?16:20
CueXXIIIseems like your display manager is running and trying to start X in a loop, but that crashes16:24
CueXXIIIif you are fast enough you could stop your display manager16:24
dvbstim not fast enough16:26
XenguyDoes anyone know how to determine whether a laptop is running a spinning hard-drive or an SSD?16:32
Xenguyi.e. is there a way to determine this with software, or do I just have to look at the actual hard-drive?16:33
fsmithredXenguy, smartmontools16:39
fsmithredsmartctl -i /dev/sdX16:40
fsmithredModel Family:     Crucial/Micron Client SSDs16:40
temp_foreveror, inxi -Dxxx  (if you have inxi installed)16:42
fsmithredI have one spinning drive that reports the rotation rate and one that does not16:42
fsmithredand probably hwinfo can do it too16:43
fsmithredMarcFP, if you stay logged in you might get an answer after some time.16:44
fsmithredDid you install the proprietary nvidia drivers?16:44
temp_foreverRotation Rate:    7200 rpm16:51
Xenguyfsmithred, Tried hwinfo:  https://paste.debian.net/hidden/07280346/16:54
Xenguyfsmithred, Line 2 says IDE, so that would indicate a spinning disk?16:54
Xenguyas opposed to an SSD?16:55
fsmithredpretty sure that's right16:57
XenguyGonna try the smartmontools now (had to install it)16:58
sixwheeledbeast /sys/block/sdX/queue/rotational  should be either 1 or 016:58
fsmithredoh, cool16:59
fsmithredamazon says it's 7200rpm16:59
sixwheeledbeastI assume that's what decides if trmi is enabled16:59
sixwheeledbeasttrim16:59
sixwheeledbeastor you can use lsblk ROTA17:00
joerginteresting17:02
sixwheeledbeastHitachi 320Gb 7200rpm from product number17:02
XenguyI assume then that if the 'Rotation Rate' field were not present, then that itself would indicate the presence of an SSD?17:02
fsmithredI don't have /sys/block/queue17:02
joerghttps://termbin.com/1h2a17:03
fsmithredor anything named rotational under sys/block17:03
fsmithredXenguy, no, my WD Blue does not report a rotation rate.17:03
fsmithredit's not ssd17:03
sixwheeledbeastI do but not checked on Devuan.17:04
MarcFPfsmithred: sorry ? about which question ? nvidia drivers ?17:04
MarcFPfsmithred: i don't remember installed nvidia drivers ... let me check first of all, one second please17:05
MarcFPfsmithred: ups!!! :Syes, i have installed nvidia packages :S17:05
Xenguyfsmithred, Interesting, so conversely, if a 'Rotation Rate' *is* reported, then it would indicate a spinning disk?17:06
fsmithredyou mentioned a problem with the vid card. Is there an actual problem or just the error messages?17:06
fsmithredXenguy, yes, I hope so. Otherwise the world has gone totally insane.17:06
fsmithredoh wait...17:06
Xenguyhaha17:06
fsmithredMarcFP, you probably should remove any nvidia packages you have installed.17:08
MarcFPfsmithred: i have installed nvidia drivers ... but i don't have any nvidia driver17:08
fsmithredis there a problem with the display?17:09
MarcFPfsmithred: now i don't have any problem with my display17:09
fsmithredok, good. If you're not using nvidia hardware then you can remove the nvidia software.17:09
MarcFPbut if i get which card has my computer, it gives to me that it has an intel card... not nvidia17:09
fsmithredright17:10
fsmithredlspci -k17:10
fsmithredwill show you what is being used17:10
fsmithredunder the VGA line17:10
MarcFPhttps://dpaste.com/83PENXVRZ17:11
MarcFPthis is my output17:11
fsmithredand below that it will say what kernel driver and module is in use17:11
joerg-C517:12
joerg?17:12
MarcFPjoerg: it's for me ?17:12
joergyep17:12
fsmithredwhat's that?17:12
MarcFP-C517:13
joerggrep --context=517:13
MarcFPbut i don't understand :S17:13
MarcFPi have wireless problem17:14
joerglspci | grep -C5 VGA17:15
fsmithredjoerg, when I run that I don't see the lines for driver and module17:15
joergto show a tad mire than one line17:16
fsmithredI think you need a -A517:16
MarcFPhttps://dpaste.com/9HBSARKCM17:16
MarcFPlspci -k get this result to me17:16
fsmithredi915 is intel17:16
fsmithredas expected17:16
MarcFPyes ... you are at good way fsmithred :)17:17
MarcFPi try to remove nvidia, then i should restart computer ... and i will cross my fingers ... becouse it should broke my X-window-system17:17
MarcFPlet me check17:17
fsmithredok, did you install firmware-realtek? You need that for wireless.17:17
MarcFPany way ... i gonna join to irssi and show what is happening17:18
MarcFPfsmithred: mmm i think that yes ... but let me check :)17:18
fsmithredactually it looks like you did.17:18
MarcFPmarc@debianHP:~$ dpkg -l | grep firmware-realtek17:19
MarcFPii  firmware-realtek                              20230210-5                              all          Binary firmware for Realtek wired/wifi/BT adapters17:19
MarcFPit's done, yes ... you are at right way :)17:19
fsmithredyou could have just said yes17:19
MarcFPups ... jajaja excuse me17:19
fsmithredif you post too many lines, the bot will take your voice away17:20
MarcFPfsmithred: ok17:20
fsmithredI need to go outside for a few minutes.17:20
fsmithredoh17:20
MarcFPhttps://dpaste.com/CPGBFCF64 <- this is my computer's nvidia driver list17:22
sixwheeledbeastsome WD drives are IntelliPower so the speed is variable.17:23
MarcFPas i understand, i can remove all of them, am i at the right way ?17:23
MarcFP:)17:35
AlexLikeRockgood morning devuan guys !17:36
fsmithredMarcFP, yes you can remove those.17:52

fsmithredwhat were you trying to do when you got that output you posted?18:14
AlexLikeRockI'm trying to revive a partition, since X11 hasn't detected my mouse or keyboard for a few days.18:17
