systemdletehelp! help!01:38
systemdleteI just typed in a gob of text into an input form in firefox.   I hit submit, and got an error message.  Is there any way to retrieve what I put in?01:39
systemdlete(I know it is the holiday weekend here in The States, but I am hoping that maybe some generous person outside of here might be around)01:39
systemdlete(oh, and asking in #mozilla is about as useful as a two-story outhouse)01:40
systemdleteMy browser is still open, though the site kicked me out and I had to log in again.  I tried using the sqlite browser to examine the formdata db file but no luck01:41
rrqI suppose the form "should" reside on the page stack of the tab, but I have no idea how to get there01:47
rrqthe history list?01:48
systemdleteand... ?01:48
systemdleteI mean, I expected those database files to contain the history, but I guess not01:49
rrqif you bring up the history list in the browser (I'm using chromium though) then that form page should be there, and possibly be selectable01:50
rrqyou may try ctrl-click on it to get a new tab with that form, which might then contain the form data01:51
systemdletesorry lost my router and the machine running firefox, so... nvm01:56
systemdletebut thanks for trying to assist01:56
onefangTwo-story outhouses did exist, and even recently.  Any where they are basically just a seat over a big hole in the ground that gets emptied every now and then is sorta two stories.  Place I lived in still had the hole in one corner of the back yard.  I didn't know about it until workers dug it up to remove it.  Later someone managed to bog their truck in the remaining hole.  I still can't figure out why th02:24
onefangey drove the truck around the back yard.02:24

devuaniI have trouble installing devuan live-usb on my t480 thinkpad. The installation worked well. After reboot I prompted in terminal "mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically" . I'm in sh terminal "(initramfs)".10:17

adaNewb1234I think you should be able to mount the drive and run from there, without doing a full boot, but I'm no expert.10:21
adaNewb1234that will probably work, if you specify where it should work10:22

adaNewb1234no. if your fs was /dev/sda, your partitions might be /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc. I don't know what /dev/nvme0n1 does to the partition names, so you should look in /dev10:41

devuanicould chroot from live-usb help?17:24
gnarfacedevuani: uh, yea probably. not sure what you did wrong so i can't really help except to speculate, but the error suggests you misconfigured software raid17:25
devuaniI don't use raid17:26
gnarfaceheh, then you really did something wrong!17:26
gnarfacebecause mdadm is the software raid utility17:26
devuaniwow17:27
gnarfaceis this your first boot, or was it working before?17:27
devuaniOk I write fully17:27
devuani1 min17:27
gnarfaceif it's first boot, you might have simply selected the wrong thing in the partitioning step17:27
devuaniSo I had windows 10 on newly bought t480. I didn't knew anything about partitions on system so I wiped my disk then randomly partitioned. didn't work for 2 days. So I wiped again and installed by web guide.17:29
devuanihere I am17:29
devuaniAlso tried booting debian 12 but other error appers17:30
gnarfaceinteresting17:30
gnarfacedevuani: at the partitioning step of the installer, what did you choose? or did you use the live usb to install?17:31

gnarfacetry using this installer though: https://files.devuan.org/devuan_daedalus/installer-iso/devuan_daedalus_5.0.1_amd64_netinstall.iso17:33

gnarfaceanyone around here remember what the issue was with t480's and nvme drives?17:35
gnarfacedevuani: there's some fix for this but i don't recall the specifics. please stick around until someone else wakes up who can help17:36
gnarfaceyou might have to do some change in the bios i think17:36
gnarfacemaybe something about secure boot or efi17:36
gnarfacemaybe you just have to load a nvme driver or something like that, i forget, sorry17:36
gnarfaceit's fixable though, i'm sure of it17:36
devuaniI saw a guide witch mantioned changing nvme drive in bios17:37
devuanibut nothing is there17:37
devuaniunsupported maybe17:38
gnarfaceyou sure you have the latest bios?17:38
devuanino17:38
gnarfaceis there an "advance options" menu or something in the bios? did you check there?17:39
CueXXIIIhm, the mdadm warning should not be the relevant error…17:39
devuaniI have 4 months old17:39
devuaniI have a hc341a and rpi pico programmers to flash it17:39
devuaniBut I have no clue how to17:40
devuanidon't want to brick it17:40
devuaniI might ask 1 dude at pc store to flash new bios and then I try to install?17:41
gnarfacedon't get hasty, wait till someone here who knows shows up17:41
gnarfacei think it was something simple like you just have to tell it to load the nvme driver early17:41
devuanignarface: yea I guess17:41
gnarfacei don't remember that clearly, but i know it came up before and there was a fix17:42
devuaniI just tried installing it for 6 days lol17:42
gnarfaceheh, well you should have asked for help before that17:42
devuaniyea17:42
gnarfacebut now you're here so that's what counts17:42
devuaniI wanted to see if I could fix myself17:42
gnarfacenvme drives are kinda weird, they're a new thing still17:43

gnarface(to linux)17:43
devuanitrue17:43
devuaniI guesa if I just tried installing it rightaway with guide I would do it but I first wiped my drive with /dev/zero and then played black box with partitioning17:44
devuanibut I learned alot about disk partitioning so thats a plus17:46
CueXXIIIwhat other errors are there besides the mdadm one (which is just a diagnostic output)17:50
fsmithredWhere do you see a step 26 in the install instructions? Installer iso instructions go to 22 and live installer instructions go to 24.18:02
devuanistep where you install bootloader and then software.18:07
devuanithere is no number of steps. felt.like 2618:07
fsmithredThat sounds like the live installer in bios mode.18:12
fsmithreddo you know if you booted legacy bios (CSM) or uefi?18:13
devuaniuefi18:16
devuanisystem detected18:16
devuaniI sure other error on netinstall id18:21
devuaniis can't mount /cdrom no file found. somethink like that18:21
devuanisux that I bricked my router and "bricked" laptop xD18:22
joerg>>...but I first wiped my drive with /dev/zero and then played black box with partitioning<< sounds like it might cause a lot of problems, even brick the device18:30
joerg_particularly_ in combination with UEFI18:32
devuaniwell O wiped again so18:33
devuaniI wanted to order a new drive. Might be a good Idea to do now.18:34
devuanisecond one18:35
gnarfacedevuani: i'm sure it's not bricked, don't panic19:10
gnarfacejoerg: if you wipe the efi out that way can't you just re-flash the bios and get it back?19:11
gnarfacedevuani: the can't mount /cdrom thing might have been a completely normal snafu...19:12
CueXXIIIi think nothing in the efi partition should be neccessary for the system to boot, until it comes to load the bootloader. how else would you swap hard disks?19:14
gnarfacei just remember vaguely there was some issue with certain early uefi machines where it would expose part of the actual bios in read/write mode within the efi partition, so if you actually zeroed the drive that way or even "rm -rf /" it would render the machine unbootable... but i thought you could still usually re-flash those with the standard bios update tool to get them back in working order19:15
gnarfacethat said, i never did it myself so i don't know for sure19:15
freaxehnice bug19:16
fsmithredI remember similar, gnarface.19:16
gnarfacebut i don't think the user is even having that problem, because aiui he's still able to boot the live iso19:16
fsmithredoh good19:17
fsmithredI recall that with some boards you needed to put the bootloader on something other than the nvme drive.19:17
gnarfaceunfortunately i think now we have him panicked and disassembling the machine to put a new drive in... which won't fix anything even if the issue is what joerg mentioned...19:17
fsmithredeven a usb19:17
gnarfacemy suspicion is that it's an issue with the mere fact it's a nvme drive, i do recall some other unrelated issue booting from nvme on daedalus and earlier, i just don't remember the fix19:18
gnarfaceseems like booting from usb would do the trick, but i thought there was a way to make it actually boot from nvme19:19
gnarfaceactually, there has to be, because Steam Decks boot from nvme19:19
gnarfacebut i recall someone actually in here knowing the trick and helping the previous person who had this issue19:19
gnarfacelike, maybe the nvme driver is just missing from the stock initramfs? anyone remember this?19:21
gnarfacethe fact the live install seems to try to fail over to software raid is probably a clue...19:21
fsmithredthe live tries raid because mdadm is installed19:23
fsmithredI suppose I could turn it off in /etc/default/19:23
fsmithredbut then you'd have to turn it on if you wanted to use the live to rescue a raid system19:24
devuanignarface: I sure can. I have 2 programmators and all equipment19:28
devuaniI never done it before19:28
gnarfacedevuani: i don't think you need any external equipment to flash the bios on a thinkpad usually19:30
CueXXIIIthe bug i remember was overwriting or deleting files in /sys/firmware/efi/efivars, which could brick some systems19:30
CueXXIII(or wherever the flash was mounted via efivarfs)19:30
fsmithredCould this be a problem of raid vs. ahci settings?19:32
gnarfacehmm19:32
fsmithredCueXXIII, yeah, I have a warning in the live installer that says "Do not format existing efi partition"19:32
gnarfacethinkpad t480 is not an obscure device, this shouldn't be very difficult, whatever it is19:33
fsmithred"On Skylake and newer Intel systems, NVMe devices connected through the chipset rather than through the CPU's PCIe lanes can be affected by Intel's software RAID mechanism. On many systems, this manifests as NVMe drives in the M.2 slot not working properly with standard NVMe drivers when the storage controller is in RAID mode, but working fine when it's in AHCI mode."19:34
CueXXIIIdevuani: did you change the console in the installer (alt+f2 i think) to see if there were errors logged?19:34
devuanino yet19:35
fsmithredhttps://forums.anandtech.com/threads/nvme-drive-booting-in-ahci-mode.2500796/19:35
devuanitl-dr? I just can't read it fully at this time 20:37.19:38
devuaniI will check out tomorrow19:38
fsmithredcheck bios settings for the drives re: Intel RAID vs. AHCI19:38
fsmithredset to ahci and see if that fixes it.19:39
devuanino mention of this in bios19:39
fsmithredThe installers both get stuck at the grub step?19:39
devuanii think19:39
devuaniI'm a bios19:39

fsmithredlook in drive section19:40
joerg>><gnarface> joerg: if you wipe...<< Sorry, I have no idea19:40
joergprobably highly hw-platform dependent19:41
fsmithredthe live would not boot if you bricked it19:41
devuanifsmithred: there is no drive section19:41

devuaniI also booted from live-usb and used df and had some output earlier as suggested by adaNewb123419:48
devuanican do again19:49
joerg(mdadm) and AIUI this all happens during initrd, so you will need to reboild that maybe? OF mdadm is causing a problem then it maybe doesn't vanish magically by simply changing a BIOS setting19:49
joergIF*19:50

devuaniis there any hidden or something in BIOS setting to unlock storage20:01

freaxehif there is no risk of further data loss, reinstall windows, then install devuan again, this time do it right20:24
freaxehthats my suggestion20:24
freaxehbut listen to these other fine people first20:24
devuaniTL:DR to people here new. I just installed devuan live-usb(sha256 verified) on my t480 laptop. First I wiped my nvme drive with dd zero. Then failed at partitioning few times becouse gui installed don't mention how to properly format efi/boot. then wiped again and installer prompted installation complete. You can now reboot. after reboot the evil error: mdadm appeared.20:27
freaxehyeah thats where it went wrong, dd zero20:28
devuaniI still have the windows boot message for some reason20:28
fsmithred???20:29
devuaniBios still mention the windows licence key so part of it still in bios I guess20:29
fsmithredyou really can ignore the mdadm error from the live iso20:29
devuaniedit: no more mention of windows boot or somethink20:30
devuanihad it earlier in boot menu20:30
fsmithredwas that before dd zero?20:31
devuaninormal windows 10 licenced20:31
devuaniall worked fine20:31
devuaninote that I had before wiped my hdd drive with dd zero few times and installed mint with ease20:32
devuaniold pc20:32
freaxehdon't worry its far from bricked20:33
rustyaxedevuani: windows license key is in the flash20:33
devuaniIn my diagnostics screen there is this text: System BIOS shadowed, Video BIOS shadowed, NVME Device Intel SSD******20:33
joergwhy the heck did you "wiped [your] hdd drive with dd zero ***few times***<<???20:33
devuaniIt was on 15 year old pc20:34
devuaniI was just testing the speed and stufd20:34
rustyaxeGood way to burn through a good handful of write cycles on flash but otherwise not end of world20:34
joergyou're aware that this "wiping" doesn't accomplish anything useful at all on a SSD?20:35
devuaniCould I burn and Bios iso through usb-otg and install it there?20:35
joergjust wears out the flash storage20:35
devuanitrue20:35
rustyaxeMucking with the bios probably wont fix the booting20:35
joergdefinitely won't20:35
CueXXIIIdevuani: find the error first why it does not boot. the mdadm message is not the error20:35
rustyaxeMight end up bricking the board if it goes south too20:36
devuaniI had 1 pc since 2007 only month ago bought t48020:37
fsmithredif you can boot the live, you should read the installation log in the installed system20:37
devuanisure20:37
fsmithredwhere that is depends on which installer you used20:37
fsmithredlive or netinstall?20:38
devuaniI have both20:38
devuanidon't work20:38
devuanilive work*20:38
fsmithredwell which one did you use last? That's what will be on the hard drive.20:38
devuaninetinstall gives cdrom mount error20:38
devuaniusb live20:39
devuani5.020:39
fsmithredit boots to console or to desktop?20:39
joergcdrom mount error is known issue20:39
devuanilive boots to deaktop like normal. net to shell20:39
freaxehuse 5.0.1, right guys?20:40
fsmithredwhat did you say just boots to shell? Is that the installed system?20:40
devuaniI have 5.0 live and 5.1 net. and debian 12 net last20:40
fsmithredlast meaning that's the last one you tried to install?20:40
joergfsmithred: seems / AIUI, it drops them to a initrd shell20:41
devuanifsmithred: well it prompts me busybox 1.320:41
fsmithredok20:41
devuani.5 bash shell20:41
devuani(initramfs)20:41
devuaniI can try installing GhostBSD for fun20:42
fsmithredwait20:42
joergdevuani: could you answer questions when they are asked?20:42
devuanisee where it might get. (boom)20:42
devuanifsmithred: live-usb 5.020:43
fsmithreddevuani, was the last install devuan or debian?20:43
devuanifsmithred: devuan20:43
devuaniafter debian 1220:43
fsmithredmight be worth booting the live and then looking around at what's on the hard drive20:44
fsmithredif /boot/grub is populated you could possibly boot from grub command line from the live20:44
devuanifsmithred: ok 1 min20:44
fsmithredjoerg, is the cdrom error just when using ventoy?20:45
devuaniI also tried installing grub manualy and in chrooted environment20:45
devuanifsmithred: yes20:45
devuaniwhat is the best boot option? normal or grub2?20:46
fsmithredif you have a spare usb stick you could dd the netinstall iso and use that to reinstall grub from the Advanced menu20:46
fsmithredI don't understand your question20:46
devuaniI'm at ventoy screen and it asks how to boot live-usb iso20:46
freaxehtry normal then if that doesn't work try grub220:47
fsmithredI don't know ventoy20:47
devuaniI picked normal them load to ram20:47
devuaniallways worked20:47
freaxehdevuan doesn't like ventoy btw20:48
freaxehor rather its the other way around20:48
golinuxIIRC ventory needs some special fiddling20:48
golinuxSearch the back log here and on the forum20:48
devuaniI wanted to change to rufus. Tech dude said that ventoy sometimes " bugged"20:48
golinuxWhy not dd?20:49
joergfsmithred: I only know I've seen user reporting it here and it got solved. "ventoy" is unknown to me20:49
