alphalphahey all01:06
alphalphado we have some openrc users here?01:06
alphalphait looks to me like rc-status is not working01:07
alphalphai does not matter if i start or stop a service, rc-status will always show the original state01:08
alphalphacan someone with openrc stop a service and then confirm with "rc-status -s" that it is stopped01:09
plasma41alphalpha: Which versions of Devuan and OpenRC are you using?01:35
alphalphaopenrc 0.45.2-2 (daedalus)01:45

jimboy  Blank Display on Ryzen and other recent AMD CPUs07:21
jimboyhow to download the non free firmware to fix the issue07:21
al1r4dnever have ryzen, so i cant help, sorry07:25
jimboythanks anyway al1r4d07:27
gnarfacejimboy: the package is called "firmware-amd-graphics" and as of current stable Debian has moved them from the section "non-free" to "non-free-firmware"07:30
gnarfaceif you don't know how to apply that change to your sources.list let me know07:30
jimboyyes I don't know07:31
gnarface(you will probably also need a bunch of mesa packages from main)07:31
gnarfacealright, stand by07:31
jimboyI'll take notes07:31
gnarfacehere, make your /etc/apt/sources.list match this example https://paste.debian.net/1326953/07:32
gnarfacethen run: "apt-get update && apt-get --no-install-recommends install firmware-amd-graphics"07:32
jimboylet me try wait.07:32
gnarface(the reboot)07:32
gnarfacehere's a list of mesa packages you'll want too https://paste.debian.net/1326954/07:34
gnarface(you might not need all of them, but you also might not already have all the ones you need)07:34
jimboyThanks man07:35
jimboyI'll come back and boot up my Devuan07:35
gnarfaceno problem, let me know if it works07:35
jimboysure I'll be back07:35
freaxehah another ryzen user07:50
gnarfacewell, hopefully his setup won't be as problematic07:55
gnarface20 minutes later though, i have to hope that it worked so perfectly he got distracted testing video games07:56
freaxehmmmm07:56
freaxehhopefully its just that his monitors plugged into the wrong port07:57
gnarfacethe thing is, they're supposed to work for basic text and 2d graphics output even without the non-free driver component, so there's every possibility that something else has gone wrong07:57
gnarfacebut i probably should have said that first07:57
gnarfaceanyway, if he makes it back, someone please let him know08:02
freaxehk08:10
adhocfreaxeh: is that a thing on ryzen machines where there is no GPU on the CPU, but there is a DVI port on the MoBo ?08:21
adhoc(or DVI, or VGA port on the MoBo)08:21
freaxehif you have an rx580 they have a dvi port on them08:23
freaxehand 3x displayports and 1x hdmi port08:23
freaxehin my personal experience the rx580 gets confused and doesnt like monitors connected to DVI and wont read their info08:24
freaxehso you get stuck at 640x48008:24
freaxehi'm not aware of any other issues surrounding ryzen platforms and motherboards08:25
freaxehi personally haven't had any issues surrounding the hdmi ports on mobos with integrated graphics ryzen chips either08:27
freaxehmy mum has a system just like that and it works fine08:27
freaxehthere are ryzen motherboards out there with dvi/vga/hdmi ports on them though08:32
adhocwe had MoBos that had HDMI but no support on the CPU, so we had to put pciex4 gpus in slots instead.08:34
adhocthe joy of building beige box servers08:34
adhocthe problem was, after a whole that model MoBo was not available, so have to find alternatives, then the GPU became unavailable,08:34
adhocso we had i think four or five configurations08:35
adhocand one image to jam all on the config onto08:35
freaxehinteresting08:35
adhocall the gpus have effectively the same lspci string, so was not like we could detect and patch based on that08:36
adhocso i cheated, had a lookup tabled based on eth1's mac address.08:37
adhocsome really cheap ryzen boards have the same MAC on both nics08:37
adhoc>.>08:37
freaxehnice08:37
adhocand we sent a bunch back because all the boards have the *same* MAC address on their NICs08:38
adhocon linux you could not change them, but you could on netbsd, go figure.08:38
freaxehhttps://www.ebay.com.au/itm/26683610524708:49
freaxehi bought that mobo/cpu/ram combo08:49
freaxehfor my file server08:49
freaxehi love the look of gigabyte mobos from that era, so colourful08:50
freaxehalso bought an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T cpu for it08:51
freaxehwhy so old? no UEFI and no AMD PSP to worry about08:51
gnarfaceguys uh, not to be a party pooper but you should move the hardware discussion to #devuan-offtopic08:52
freaxehroger08:52
freaxehadhoc should join #devuan-offtopic09:03
freaxehthat way i'm not talking to myself again09:03
* freaxeh furiously eats tic tacs09:03

Guest2175is something missing?12:02
rrqdaedalus-proposed-updates12:03
rrqbut I don;t think that's it12:03
rrqobviously you've done apt-get update as well12:04
Guest2175yes that's correct12:04
Guest2175let me try again12:04
Guest2175and paste the output here12:04
rrqpasting a lot may get you into trouble12:05
buZzplease dont flood this channel with your pastes, you can use paste.debian.net12:05
Guest2175sure, thanks.12:05
rrq"apt-get policy firmware-amd-graphics" tells mi it's "http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus/non-free-firmware"12:07
Guest2175https://paste.debian.net/1326974/12:08
Guest2175@rrq so what should i use?12:08
rrqyou seem to have DNS problem12:09
Guest2175i see12:09
Guest2175i'm not from US12:09
rrqthat's good12:10
rrqcan you ping deb.devuan.org ?12:10
Guest2175let me try12:10
rrqdo you use connman? if so, stop doing that12:11
Guest2175no i don't use that and i don't know that is12:11
rrqthat's a godd state to be in:)12:11
rrqnormally deb.devuan.org is a cname for deb.rr.devuan.org which resolves to a fair number of download mirrors12:13
Guest2175https://paste.debian.net/1326977/12:14
rrqok. what does your /etc/resolv.conf say about "nameserver" ?12:15
Guest2175let me check12:16
Guest2175https://paste.debian.net/1326978/12:17
rrqI guess thats yoru router, which indicates your ISP has broken DNS12:18
rrqtry chaning the IP address to 1.1.1.112:18
buZzDNS address*12:19
Guest2175in the resolv.conf?12:19
rrqyes12:19
Guest2175let me try12:19
rrqbut remember that dhcp will refresh its IP upon reconnections12:19
rrqperhaps you can program your router to use 1.1.1.1 as its uplink for DNS12:20
freaxehor quad912:21
Guest2175wow. it's working now.12:21
Guest2175thanks man @rrq12:21
rrqyes, 1.1.1.1 is "cloudflare" while 9.9.9.9 would be quad912:22
Guest2175i don't understand any of this but it works haha12:22
buZzand 8.8.8.8 is google12:22
rrqyes. quad9 might be best actuallly in terms of "privacy"12:23
gnarfaceah, someone should have mentioned the part about how the display wasn't supposed to be blank even without this...12:59
gnarfacethere might be a separate issue12:59
dvbsthello my favourite people13:13
dvbstwhat is the prefered way to install virtualbox on devuan13:14
buZzalas virtualbox is no longer in devuan13:19
onefangMy favourite way is apt install qemu, but YMMV.  B-)13:35
dvbstyea i would do that too but im installing this for my friend and he wants something easy13:36
rrqand he doesnt know qemu?13:41
dvbsthe doesnt know linux at all13:43
dvbsthe never used a computer in fact13:43
buZzthen there's no harm in installing qemu13:43
buZzif they have no basis of comparison, its all just as hard or easy13:43
buZz'dumbing down OS' just gets you windows users13:44
dvbstidk man he wanted me to install virtualbox so i thought i would get him virtualbox13:44
dvbsti mean i totally agree with you but is virtualbox dumbing it down so much?13:44
buZzwhy would they ask for software they dont know13:44
buZzif they never ever used a computer13:44
dvbsti mean thats a fair point13:45
dvbsthe also asked me to install some android only image editing programs and some tool for automatic brightness13:45
dvbstso yea13:46
rrq:) have fun ... afair virtualbox comes with a need to recompile a (networking?) kernel module anew when the kernel version changes; but most of that is probably made fairly automatic13:47
dvbstbut still, my other buddy promised to get him a windows vm image with all the windows-only tools he wants and all that stuff and that buddy only has windows and i dont think they make qemu on windows13:47
buZzhe doesnt WANT any windowsonly tools13:48
buZzhe has never used a computer13:48
buZzthose desires are not their13:48
buZzs13:48
buZzand qemu works fine on windows13:48
dvbsthe does want windows only tools, he does graphics and stuff but all his life he was using his phone, but that doesnt mean that he doesnt know what he wants, he does watch youtube and knows about what you can do on a computer13:49
rrqI think you'll need to go to vortualbox website and grab a version for linux, then run its installer script13:51
dvbstthey have a .deb file13:51
rrqdoes that install?13:51
dvbstbut i remember someone here saying that this is bad for the system cuz it messes up dependencies and all that13:51
dvbstso i wanted to ask what is the prefered way of doing it with minimal damage13:52
rrqwell then I wouldn't do it at all ;) ... but if the deb is trustworth and works you could use that13:54
rrqif it doesn't you probably will need to use there generic linux install13:55
djphif you're gonna install vbox ... uh, it's in the repos ...13:56
rrqis it? which package?13:57
djphwait no I'm looking at the wrong VM.13:57
djphnote to self, burn the 'buntu box to the ground13:57
buZzquite sure that .deb will depend on systemderp14:05
fsmithredthe deb packages from virtualbox.org work in devuan14:29
fsmithredno problem other than you have to run the config program every time the kernel gets upgraded14:30
fsmithredvboxconfig14:31
buZzwoot, cool14:56
masonlru: Your note about the wrong link has been corrected. Thank you again.15:42
onefangDoes refractainstaller need a swap partition?18:53
onefangAh, my fault, ran out of space on that partition.18:54
* onefang runs it again. Meh, got the timezone wrong anyway.18:56
fsmithredonefang, no. If there's no swap partition it will make a swapfile, 256MB default.19:01
onefangYep, that's what it ran out of space trying to do.19:02
onefang1GB was a little too small for /.19:03
lrumason: you're welcome!19:34
amarsh04anyone on Ceres/unstable, beware of Debian bug #1079022: kmod - makes the machine unbootable20:38
aswjrispI have a laptop I intsalled devuan on I am having a hardware problem.  When it boots it gives a message like no bootable device.  I opened it up and it is using a nvme m.2 drive.  I tried resetting it in the socket but I still get the same message on power on.21:12
aswjrispI was thinking that I would get a m.2 to usb adapter and plug it into another computer to see if I could get the data off of the drive.21:13
aswjrispWhen I installed devuan I used the graghical installer and set up disk encryption.21:14
aswjrispWhat program do I need to use to decrypt the drive?21:14
aswjrispA manual decrypt of the drive from another computer.  Normally I let the devuan boot process decrypt the drive.21:15
ErRandirCan't you do a rescue boot from a USB disk or from the network?21:17
aswjrispErRandir: I had not really considered other options.21:19
aswjrispI was thinking of connecting the drive with a usb adpater so that I could copy the data to the other computer.21:20
aswjrispErRandir: what do you mean when you say rescue boot from the network?21:20
aswjrispErRandir: When you say rescue boot from a USB disk are you refering to using a usb boot with the devuan install image on it?21:22
ErRandirsome network cards can do a PXE boot.21:22
aswjrispErRandir: okay I do not know if the laptop has a network card that can do a PXE boot.21:23
aswjrispThe error about no bootable disk happens very early in the boot process and looks like it is coming from the bios maybe.21:23
ErRandirquite likely.21:25
alphalpha@aswjrisp sudo cryptsetup open "$DEV" --type "$TYPE" "$NAME"21:35
alphalphato open encrypted your device21:35
alphalphaand instead of buying a adapter for your card, you could first boot a live system, maybe knoppix, and check the SMART parameters of your drive21:36
aswjrispalphalpha: I am looking at https://devuan.org/get-devuan would the minimal-live or desktop-live provide a sufficient live systems?21:41
alphalphai am not 100% sure if "smartmontools" is installed on the minimal-live, if not, you would need to install that21:44
aswjrispalphalpha: what free/open source program would you suggest to get SMART parameter information about the drive?21:44
aswjrispoh never mind smartmontools21:45
alphalpha smartctl -a "$device"21:45
aswjrispalphalpha: I have not used live systems before.  If I needed to install a program (cryptsetup or smartmontools) where would it be installed as there is not a functional disk?22:04
alphalphain your RAM22:05
alphalphaeverything will be gone when you shutdown22:06
aswjrispOh that is interesting, I think I will give a live system a try for this.22:11
