welcome::You1
    When tax records show a small mountain village has been paying their tithe
    in gold, not trade goods, a wise adventurer finds it pays to make a visit.

    As you swagger into the village you see that you have made the right
    choice. This village is too prosperous by far!

    "Peasant! How does a village like this afford glazing for their windows?"

    The peasant looks up from the wagon wheel she was inspecting. Eyeing
    your crystal broadsword, she replies: "Why, we supplements our meager
    production with trade, m'lord."

    "Trade? Do not mock me. There are no trade routes through here."

    "'Tis trade with the kobolds, m'lord, not with cities."

welcome::You2
    "Kobolds? The purple dogs? Vermin of the caves? Why trade with such when
    you can take by force?"

    By this point, a crowd of villagers has gathered. A different peasant,
    middle-aged but skin roughened from the wind, takes over the replies:
    "Perhaps, but we are but mere peasants and lack your skill..."

    "That is true," you note.

    "But," the peasant continues, "I should warn m'lord. Others have tried."

    "And been defeated by kobolds?" you shout with disbelief.

    "Well, they never did come back."

    "Then they were not adventurers. Show me the way to these kobolds."

    "Of course, m'lord." The peasant's gaze shifts to your money pouch. "But
    first would m'lord wish to equip at our fine stores?"

    "Equip? To fight kobolds? And from this mere hamlet when I've equipped at
    the capital? Be quiet, peasant, and lead."

welcome::You3
    You enter the kobold warrens. These kobolds have been spending gold
    freely, so there must be a rich source in their lair.

game::lose
    The scurrilous vermin do not even wait for your body to cool before they
    begin their celebration. A loud cheer sweeps through the caves. They run
    from the shadows and remove all of value from your body. They open your
    money pouch and pour out the thousands of gold pieces which were your
    hard earned spoil from earlier adventures.

    The last words you hear as your consciousness fades are: "It's time to go
    shopping!"

game::victoryprofit
    Congratulations! You have escaped the kobold warrens!

    The gold you found, along with that from the earlier giant encounter, will
    easily pay off your debts. The gambling dens of the capital should shudder
    with fear now that you are back in the game.

    Your triumphant return to the capital is met with joy by the creditors you
    had fled. Unfortunately, your luck seems to sour quickly and you swiftly
    find yourself again in debt. And so the cycle repeats.

game::victoryloss
    You stumble out of the kobold warrens with even less gold than you entered.
    What will you do about your debts?

    You have no choice but to keep adventuring.

    A few days later you find an orc encampment. Hoping to turn your luck, you
    yell a war cry and charge. The orcs, to your shock, start laughing.

    "Look, it is the fool that lost his gold to the kobolds!"

    You drop your sword and flee in shame. A lucky orc arrow hits you in the
    back.

    You die.

game::victoryeven
    You decide discretion would be the better part of valour and make an
    expeditious retreat from the kobold warrens. Backtracking to the town that
    told you of the location, you wisely drop a few gold to silence their
    tongues. No need for anyone to know that you backed down from a fight with
    a kobold!

    You return to the road, if less confident, at least more wise.

game::victoryevenhurt
    While you escaped the warren with your gold, and your life, you were unable
    to silence those who tended your wounds. Rumour and gossip spread faster
    than you could move. By the time you returned to the capital you found all
    the street urchins happily singing of your defeat by mere kobolds.

    You try to convince your creditors that you are good for the few hundred
    remaining gold of your debt. They have heard the stories, however, and
    doubt your word. "If you can't defeat a kobold, what hope have you of
    recovering our money?"

    The courts seize your possessions and throw you into debtors prison.

    A few decades later, still in debtors prison, you die.

mob::You
    You are a brave adventurer seeking fortune to repay those minor debts you
    accrued when last in the capital. With the gold you will recover from
    these warrens you will easily cover your debts. Your return will truly be
    glorious. It was lack of sufficient stake that caused your foolproof
    method to fail so spectacularly at the casino. With enough gold you will
    break the house.

    A fortunate encounter with a tribe of giants has already fattened your
    wallet. These kobolds will put you in the black. Maybe, after they have
    been looted, you will seek some wandering orcs?

mob::kobold
    Kobolds are small purple furred dog-like creatures. Individual kobolds
    pose little threat. So do lots of kobolds. Just wade in and cut them all
    down.

mob::kobold mage
    This kobold is holding what appears to be a magic wand. How cute! As if
    it were a real mage!

    Hmm... A quick cut of the sword, and that wand could be yours!

mob::kobold archer
    This kobold is holding a simple wooden bow. It looks like a child's toy.
    You wonder if the kobold knows which end of the arrows are pointed.

    A ranged weapon would make disposing of the kobolds easier. Perhaps you
    should remove the bow from this kobold's cold, dead, hands?

mob::kobold guard
    The kobold snarls and brandishes a crude stone dagger. While it would no
    doubt do more damage than a kobold punch, that reveals more about the
    ineffectuality of kobold punches than the strength of the dagger.

    Compared to your sword, it seems wrong to place the two in the same
    category of "weapon".

mob::kobold baker
    This kobold is carrying a loaf of bread. With typical
    parochialness, you conclude it must be a kobold baker.

    If you were hungrier, you'd consider going to the effort of
    requisitioning the kobold's wares. But what you hunger is gold.
    So this kobold can live... for now.

mob::baby kobold
    It is hard to imagine when you look at the cute and playful kobold
    pup that it will grow into a one of the blights of the land. From
    its oversize feet to the way it scampers about on all-fours, it is
    all playfulness and happiness, there is no sign of the low-cunning
    that makes its adult form such a nuisance.

    It is a bit of a quandary. The kobold baby cannot harm you,
    (well, kobold adults can hardly be said to harm YOU, but let us
    imagine the poor village folk) but if left to grow, can the
    problem be said to be solved?

    Do you even care about the problem? Where's the gold!

mob::scared baby kobold
    This cowering kobold baby poses no threat to you. It snarls,
    baring its ineffectual teeth. Unfortunately, the survival of the
    kobold race is predicated on the survival of their babies, so this
    one, like most, can run very fast, making it a great nuisance to
    track down and kill.

    Good thing, then, that you aren't here on a mission of
    extermination. All you need to call it a success is the gold.

item::kobold corpse
    The mangled remains of a kobold. A suitable warning of what lies
    in store for any kobold that crosses your path.

    You briefly consider dragging away the corpse so as to not alert the other
    kobolds. You then recall that kobolds are reputed to have an excellent
    sense of smell. Since you have no intention of scrubbing the blood from
    the floor, you might as well leave the entire corpse.

item::gold coin
    The Citran gold mark has been the universal currency of the land
    for centuries. When this type of coin was first minted at the
    height of the Orange Age some merchants refused to accept them.
    They claimed they were not pure gold but some inferior amalgam.
    Proof of this was simple - the density of gold is such that no
    human could carry a thousand gold pieces in their pocket! And yet
    this was possible with the Citran gold mark.

    The Citran mint calmly explained that it was not their coin that
    was debased, but rather natural gold. They countered the heavy
    weight of natural gold was proof it was insufficiently pure.

    Pragmatic merchants sided swiftly with the mint and the Citran
    gold mark has been the unit of exchange ever since.

item::sausages
    A string of plump red sausages. You shudder as you wonder what
    sort of lowly creature could serve as fodder for a kobold's meat
    grinder.

item::bread
    A thick crusted loaf of bread. You wonder if the kobolds ever
    mistake a particularly soft rock for a piece of bread.

item::pacifier
    A crudely carved chew-ring that has been smoothed by countless
    milk-teeth.

    Do kobolds drink milk? Are they even mammals? They always claim
    to be related to dragons, after all, and dragons hatch from eggs.

item::kobold doll
    A few rags have been carefully sewed together and dyed purple.
    Squinting, you can see that it is supposed to be in the shape of a
    kobold. It has been well-worn by many paws.

item::stuffed toy dragon
    Hey! That is the stuffed rendition of Melkar the Destroyer, the
    red dragon that is said to have ruled the Blue Age! You haven't
    seen one of those for sale outside the capital, and even there
    they were not cheap.

    This one, sadly, has not only been unboxed, but has been so well
    worn that it would barely qualify as BS-1.

item::threadbare rag
    This rag looks like it has been dragged over every inch of these
    warrens. While it has been well washed, no amount of cleansing
    can erase the history it has seen. You wonder why even kobolds
    would keep such an item around.

item::mushrooms
    A bunch of mushrooms. Edible? Maybe. You never know with
    mushrooms. Even if you fed it to one of the kobolds, you'd still
    have to wait a week or so to see if it proved toxic. And you'd
    still not know if it was some natural kobold immunity rather than
    the safety of the mushroom.

item::apple
    A nice winter apple. You wonder how it made its way underground.

item::pickle
    A cucumber that had been immersed in a brine solution until it
    pickled.

item::amulet of true sight
    This powerful amulet allows you to transport your mind to witness
    far away actions. Your roaming mind can't be seen by anyone else,
    allowing you to scout out areas prior to battle.

    Be warned: while your roaming sight does move at a higher speed
    than you, your body is left undefended during your excursion!

    Hit [m] to start meditating, hit it again to stop.

item::ring of searching
    If there is one thing that kobolds do well, it is the construction
    of traps. Fortunately, you have your faithful ring of searching!
    By concentrating through the ring, you can detect all traps in an
    expanding circle about you. The longer you hold the
    concentration, the bigger a range you can detect.

    Remember: a trap revealed is a trap disarmed!

    Hit [s] to successively invoke the ring.

item::healing potion
    The succour of many an adventurer! The powerful draught will
    instantly bind your wounds and restore your health.

item::crystal broadsword of force
    While you had many successes with your trusty Steel Mace of Accuracy,
    when you found this broadsword in the chest at the bottom of the
    jelly swamp, you knew you had to upgrade.

    It seems a shame to use such an epic weapon against mere kobolds.
    The weakest strike could kill a kobold five times over.

item::crude bow
    A simple wooden bow and a quiver full of arrows. Not a patch
    on your Yew Long Bow of Range. But you had to sell that after
    that unlucky break in cards.

item::crude stone dagger
    A stone dagger. Calling it crude seems implied by the nature of
    the material, but you feel the prefix is justified in this case.
    Only a kobold would find such a weapon an upgrade over one's
    natural fists.

item::fire wand
    A Flexar Fire Wand! Not the most powerful of fire wands, but its
    fast fire rate and effectively infinite charges has endeared it to
    many an adventurer.

item::ice wand
    The Icknars started production of this ice wand only ten years
    ago. Definitely not high end equipment, but aimed directly at
    market share Flexar serves with their fire wands. It trades
    away higher max damage for greater consistency.
